Magic

The world of AlexMUD contains much magic, and when used wisely it can bring about much fame and fortune. Magic can be found in any of the forms on the following list: Spells, Potions, Scrolls, Wands, Staves.

In addition, some creatures have the innate ability to call upon powerful magic with nothing more than a simple thought. Also, some items have had powerful magic bestowed upon them. Unfortunately, this often leads to the artifacts being unusable by people of differing alignment to the original creator.

Be warned that spell-casters are by far the most powerful people in the land once they have reached their fullest potential. However, it is a slow and arduous process and very few reach that pinnacle. Spells can be learned from spellbooks (or prayerbooks in the case of clerical casters), which can be found scattered about the land.

Each spell falls into a magic school. The known magic schools are Abjuration, Alteration, Conjuration, Divination, Enchantment, Evocation, Illusion and Necromancy. Each school has an opposite, as indicated in the table below. Within each school there are 8 tiers. Spells within a school fall into one of the 8 tiers, with the minor spells belonging to tier 1, and the major spells belonging to tier 8.

With the exception of clerics, who have no prayers available in the Enchantment and Illusion schools, all casters can learn tier 1 spells in any school they choose. Where things become more complex is once you begin learning tier 2 spells and above. A caster that learns a tier 2 spell in a school (e.g., Abjuration), is forever prevented from learning tier 8 spells in the opposite school (Necromancy). If he or she then went on to learn a tier 3 spell, he/she would be forever prevented from learning tier 7 spells in the opposite school. The following table shows which tiers are prevented by learning which spells.

It should be noted that prevention is cumulative. A caster who learns a tier 3 spell in Abjuration without having learned any tier 2 spells (a possibility), is prevented from learning tier 7 and tier 8 spells in Necromancy, not just tier 7 spells.

In addition to tiers, each spell has a number of levels associated with it. As additional levels of the spell are learned, the spell becomes more powerful - lasting longer, doing more damage, offering enhanced protection, etc.
